Peter Means
I grew up with photography.
My father introduced me to the darkroom at his workplace, where he taught my sisters and me how to develop and print black-and-white photographs. Watching images slowly appear on paper hooked me immediately. Before long, I had built my own darkroom in my parents’ basement and became “that guy” in high school — photographing yearbook assignments, friends, and nature simply because I loved it.
That early passion never left.
Today, photography is both my profession and my craft. I work full-time as a photographer at Virginia Tech, where I create visual stories that support the university’s communications and marketing efforts. Alongside photography, my background includes videography, website design, social media marketing, and graphic design — skills I’ve developed and used professionally for many years.
This combination shapes how I work. I understand not just how to make strong images, but how those images are used — on websites, in publications, across social media, and in marketing campaigns. Whether I’m photographing people, events, or places, my goal is always the same: create images that feel natural, confident, and purposeful.
In my portfolio, you’ll see a mix of professional work from my role at Virginia Tech and personal projects that continue to fuel my creativity. Together, they reflect a career built on experience, curiosity, and a lifelong love of photography.
